INTRO. 775 / ANTI-LANDMARKING BILL HEARING POSTPONED

Intro. 775 has been introduced in the City Council by Landmarks Subcommittee Chair Peter Koo (l.) and
Land Use Committee Chair David Greenfield (r.)

We are pleased to report that the
planned July 21 City Council hearing on Intro. 775 – a bill which would hamstring landmarking efforts by imposing rigid timeframes for designation with draconian penalties for not meeting deadlines – has been postponed.  A new hearing is not expected before September.

While this hearing has been postponed, Intro. 775 has not gone away. This bill in its current form would do great harm to preservation efforts, and had it been in effect, would have made the designation of many of our city’s landmarks and historic districts, including the Greenwich Village Historic District, impossible. The bill would result in the loss of more of our city’s great historic resources while encouraging resistant developers to stonewall and delay the process in order to “run out the clock” and exempt their properties from potential landmark designation. Read more about the bill here.
