LPC Chair Announces Resignation; Help Ensure Her Replacement Is A True Preservationist

Yesterday, amid great controversy and pushback over her plan to change the rules of the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) to cut the public out of the decision-making process in many cases, current LPC Chair Meenakshi Srinivasan announced she would be resigning her post on June 1. GVSHP released the following statement:

Now more than ever, the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission needs a leader who understands the value of preserving and protecting our city’s history, its heritage and culture, its sense of place and its livability. We have seen a disturbing drift in recent years, accelerated under the de Blasio Administration, in which preservation has been undervalued and the Landmarks Preservation Commission was more geared towards greasing the skids for developers than protecting what New Yorkers love about their city. The Chair’s resignation is an opportunity to get us back on the path towards truly valuing the special qualities which make our city so distinctive and wonderful, which includes preserving and protecting its history.

It’s critical that we ensure that the Chair’s replacement is a true preservationist who will fight to protect our city’s landmarked buildings and neighborhoods, and ensure that worthy historic structures and areas are designated. The Mayor will soon have to nominate a new Chair of the LPC, which will have to be confirmed by the City Council.
