MTA Plans to Construct an “Emergency Ventilation Plant” near Greenwich and 7th Avenues
-Plant Could Be as Much as 6 stories Tall
-GVSHP Submits Concerns, Urges Alternatives Be Considered

The MTA has announced plans to construct an emergency ventilation plant near the intersection of Greenwich and 7th Avenues, and has begun the process of examining the environmental impacts of such a project (see here). The plan, not dissimilar to the recent nearby MTA project on West 13th Street which took years to complete, would involve a significant amount of digging and construction and might result in a permanent structure of as much as six stories in height.
The public has until July 26 to provide comments about the draft environmental impact statement. GVSHP has submitted comments raising very serious concerns about the potential impact of the proposal on traffic and nearby fragile historic structures. We are also very concerned about the cumulative impact of this project and the recent MTA project just two blocks away, as well as the massive St. Vincent’s Hospital project being discussed for right next door. We have urged that alternatives such as other locations, as well as expanding the existing infrastructure within the subway, be considered (see GVSHP’s letter).
