New School Open House Re: New 14th St. & 5th Ave. Building

The New School will hold an Open House to display updated designs for its planned new building on 5th Avenue between 13th and 14th Streets on Thursday, May 6th from 3:30 to 5:30 pm.

Earlier this year the New School showed preliminary plans for the new building, which did not include final design elements for the exterior of the building. The planned building would be 17 stories — a significant reduction from the originally planned 300+ ft tall building the New School proposed, but nevertheless still a large building. Unlike the original plan, the currently planned building would not require any variances, as it would follow zoning requirements to set back after the 6th floor, thus reducing the perceived bulk of the building and helping to preserve light and air to surrounding streets and buildings.

GVSHP had raised concerns, however, about the exterior of the building, which preliminary plans showed consisting of alternating strips of glass and metal, similar to an office building. The Open House designs are expected to show greater detail and refined thinking on these exterior features.
