New School New Building Update

GVSHP and other neighbors and community leaders recently met with representatives of the New School at the request of Councilmember Rosie Mendez to find out more about their development plans for their site on 5th Avenue between 13th and 14th Streets. The New School had originally proposed a massive, 300-350 ft. tall entirely glass building with no setbacks, which would have required zoning variances and resulted from huge air rights transfers. GVSHP and neighbors raised strong objections to several key aspects of the design, and the New School eventually announced they were dropping the controversial plan.

The New School’s new plans are for a smaller building of approximately 18 stories which would include setbacks to allow more light and air to the street and surrounding buildings, would not require variances, and would only include modest air rights transfers. A preliminary and approximate massing diagram (subject to change) shown by the New School showing what the new building could look like can be found HERE

The New School has not yet shown architectural designs for the new building; GVSHP and neighbors had objected to the all-glass design of the prior plan, and reiterated our desire to see a building which relates to the character of its surroundings. The New School has promised to hold a public meeting about the plan when more information is available, including a design scheme. The New School has also posted information about the project on its website which can be accessed HERE and HERE.
