Dear Chair Tierney:
I write to express my strong support for the proposed NoHo Historic District extension, and I urge the Commission to act as soon as possible to designate this endangered district. I do however urge the Commission to also include properties currently excluded from the proposed district along Bond, Great Jones, West 4th, and Lafayette Streets, as well as the Bowery.
The proposed district is an integral part of the historic NoHo neighborhood, and more than merits landmark designation and preservation. NoHo and specifically the proposed extension include a wonderful array of late 19th and early 20th century industrial buildings check by jowl with early to mid-19th century houses and stables. This eclectic neighborhood’s cobblestoned streets and evocative architecture made it a major draw to artists starting in the 1970s, and it has been home to some of the most significant artistic activity of the last generation.
I hope that you will move ahead with designation of the remainder of NoHo as a historic district as soon as possible. Thank you.
