Historic Plaque Honoring America’s First Woman Doctor and First Hospital for Women to be Unveiled Monday, May 14 at 6pm – Join Us!

GVSHP will unveil another of our historic plaques to mark the site of The New York Infirmary for Women and Children at 58 Bleecker Street (at Crosby Street) in NoHo, the first hospital for women, staffed by women, and run by women, founded by Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell. Dr. Blackwell was the first woman in America to receive a degree in medicine, blazing the trail for the entry of women into medicine and focusing her work on public health efforts for the poor and working classes. The hospital provided groundbreaking free care for women and children, and instruction for women studying for their medical degree.

Speakers will include the great-grand-niece of Elizabeth Blackwell and prominent scholars and practitioners in the field of women’s medicine and women’s rights.

Find out more here and RSVP to join us for what should be a wonderful ceremony.
