Village Preservation is part of a coalition of community groups, preservation organizations, elected officials, and neighborhood residents seeking to save the landmarked former CHARAS-El Bohio Community and Cultural Center/old P.S. 64 at 605 East 9th Street from destruction at the hands of the developer who purchased it twenty years ago. The owner has consistently tried to demolish the building, construct a high-rise dorm on the site, and place illegal uses in the building. He has already destroyed architectural ornament and allowed the building to dangerously deteriorate. We have been working hard to ensure the building is protected and returned to a true community use. When he ran for re-election in 2017, Mayor de Blasio came to the neighborhood and promised that we would seek to gain control of the building and return it to public use. So far he has not taken any apparent steps to do so. Learn more here. |
