Hope for old P.S. 64/former Charas-El Bohio – Mayor Says City Should “Reacquire”

The former P.S. 64/Charas-El Bohio Center, which a developer has allowed to rot and decay.

Some tentatively good news came out of last night’s Town Hall with Mayor de Blasio and Councilmember Rosie Mendez.  The Mayor for the first time publicly threw his support behind the City attempting to “re-acquire” the former P.S. 64/Charas-El Bohio community/cultural center at 605 E. 9th Street, which a developer acquired nearly two decades ago and has alternately allowed to rot and sought to develop with illegal uses.  GVSHP has been a part of a coalition of community groups including the East Village Community Coalition and local elected officials led by City Councilmember Rosie Mendez which have consistently sought to block the developer from moving illegal uses into the building and get the building returned to a true community use.

The Mayor’s very public announcement at last night’s Town Hall is far from a guarantee that this cherished East Village landmark and community institution will be wrested from this developer and returned to a true community use. However, the City has enormous power and resources to make this happen, and it was the City which made the mistake nearly two decades ago of placing this cherished public resource in private hands.

GVSHP will continue to work with our coalition partner to turn this announcement into reality.  Special thanks go to City Councilmember Rosie Mendez for spearheading this effort, and to all our coalition partners in this effort, especially the East Village Community Coalition.
