Re: NYU's Proposed Changes to Silver Towers

Dear Chair Tierney:

I oppose NYU’s proposed addition of a dog run and playground to the landmarked Silver Towers complex.  I believe the proposed changes are inconsistent with the important protected features of the design and I urge you not to approve them.

The open space within the Silver Towers complex was designed to be simple, serene, and abstract.  The proposed addition of the dog run and playground at this location -- moved from Mercer Street if NYU is given permission to take over and build upon that public land -- would completely change that relationship, making the space cluttered, busy, and out of sync with the simple geometric relationships of the overall plan.  Worse, the dog run and playground would be visible directly behind the Sylvette statue as viewed from Bleecker Street, which is where most people see it.  This would create an entirely inappropriate backdrop for this iconic piece of outdoor sculpture which currently plays off against the grid of the towers, the sky, and the city around it.

Please keep Silver Towers true to the design principles which make it so special and which warranted landmark designation, and reject these proposed changes.
