South Village Named One of NY State’s “Seven to Save”

South Village 7 to SaveLast week the Preservation League of NY State announced the designation of the South Village as one of its “Seven to Save” – the seven most significant endangered historic sites in New York State.
GVSHP has consistently worked with the League to help preserve the South Village, from our 2006 report and proposal for a South Village Historic District which was funded by Preserve NY, a grant program of the NY State Council on the Arts and the Preservation League of NY State, to our nomination this year of the South Village for Seven to Save status.  In a similar partnership, in 2002 the League designated Gansevoort Market one of its “Seven to Save,” which was followed the next year by the city landmarking most of the neighborhood

See coverage of the South Village announcement in the NY Times, the Villager, and on WNYC; see video of the announcement HERE and photos HERE.

The announcement by the League highlights the immediate dangers facing the South Village and the losses it has already suffered, as well as its great historic significance in relation to the history of New York State.  That danger is particularly great given plans the City is considering for major rezonings on either side of the South Village, for NYU, and in Hudson Square,  which would significantly increase development pressure on the unprotected South Village.  While NY State has determined the entire South Village eligible for the State and National Registers of Historic Places, the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) designated just one third of our proposed South Village Historic District in 2010, but in spite of promises to consider the remainder, has not yet moved ahead.

Following last week’s announcement, GVSHP, the Preservation League of NY State, and the Historic Districts Council have written to the LPC, urging them to move ahead with designation of the remainder of the proposed district.
