“South Village Preservation Wait A Costly One”

Yesterday’s AM NY featured a story on GVSHP’s efforts to secure New York City landmark designation for the South Village, a historic 35-block area south of Washington Square Park and West 4th Street. While the City has given indications that they are considering proposing part of the area for historic district designation, they have not yet taken any formal action, and have not yet given a commitment or time frame for the remainder of the district.

In the meantime, GVSHP has documented at least eight noteworthy historic sites within the proposed South Village Historic District that have been destroyed, compromised, or threatened in just the last few months alone. Additionally, as indicated in the story, the owner of 178 Bleecker Street (pictured right) is seeking to demolish his 1861 building to replace it with an 8-story building which GVSHP contends would be illegally large. GVSHP is asking the City to act immediately to prevent further losses and protect the South Village.

How To Help:

Write to the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission urging that they move forward with designation of the proposed South Village Historic District as soon as possible, before more of our history is lost.
