South Village Landmarking Moving; Developers Moving Too?

After a several-year effort, the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) has finally agreed to formally consider part of GVSHP’s proposed South Village Historic District for landmark designation. This is very welcome news for this increasingly endangered area, but there are several causes for concern.

The LPC is notifying all owners — including potential developers — that they are thinking about landmarking their property, but will not be taking any action for several months to prevent them from pulling demolition or construction permits that would pre-empt landmark designation if they chose. GVSHP is particularly concerned about this because of the increasing rate of loss of historic sites in the South Village. The LPC is also only considering the first third of our proposed district as an extension of the existing Greenwich Village Historic District, rather than as a new South Village Historic District. A South Village Historic District could eventually include the remaining two-thirds of our proposed district, and would recognize and honor the distinctive and particular immigrant and working-class history of the South Village.
