South Village Historic District Phase One Vote Scheduled

GVSHP has just learned that the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) has scheduled a vote on the first phase of our proposed South Village Historic District for June 22nd. This is wonderful news as this 238-building historic district extension will be the largest expansion of landmark protections in Greenwich Village since the Greenwich Village Historic District was designated in 1969!

GVSHP first approached the LPC about designating the South Village in 2002, and in late 2006 submitted a 95-page report* documenting the history and significance of the South Village as well as proposing boundaries for a historic district. In the fall of 2009 the LPC held a hearing on the first phase of our proposed South Village Historic District where there was overwhelming support for landmarking of this first phase as well as the entire South Village. Thank you so much to everyone who has written letters, attended meetings, or sent e-mails in support of landmarking the South Village. Special thanks go to our members of our Historic South Village Advisory Board and all of the community groups, block associations, elected officials, and preservation organizations which supported landmarking the South Village.

Sadly, during the time that the City has been considering our proposal for landmarking the South Village many important buildings have been lost or compromised. GVSHP will continue to closely monitor the South Village and work hard to prevent further compromise of its historic resources. Toward that end we have urged the LPC to consider the remaining two-thirds of our proposed South Village Historic District as soon as possible, and we thank Borough President Stringer, Congressman Nadler, State Senator Duane, and Assembly Member Glick for doing the same. If you would like to help in urging the LPC to designate the remainder of the South Village as soon as possible, click here.

We will have more news soon, but thank you again to everybody who made this historic victory possible!
