Rezoning Continues Through Public Review Process; Likely To Increase South Village Development Pressure
 GVSHP has learned that plans have been filed for a new 14-story residential tower at 180 Sixth Avenue at Vandam Street, within the proposed South Village Historic District. This follows a growing spate of new demolitions and planned out of context developments in the neighborhood including at 178 Bleecker Street, 209-229 Sullivan Street (Children's Aid Society), 140 Sixth Avenue/78 Sullivan Street, 73-75 Sullivan Street, and 182 Spring Street.
GVSHP has long pushed for a historic district designation of the area and a contextual rezoning, which would help preserve historic buildings and ensure that any new development remains in context and scale for the neighborhood, both of which the City has thus far refused to enact.
This latest planned development is particularly disturbing not only for its out-of-proportion scale, but because it appears that the size of the planned development may at least be partly a consequence of the sale of development rights from an adjacent formerly city-owned property at 166 Sixth Avenue which is supposed to be restricted in use to social service facilities.
