South Village Landmarking Hearing Scheduled

The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) has scheduled a hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 27th at 2:30 P.M. on two proposed historic district extensions which would cover parts of GVSHP’s proposed South Village Historic District. The LPC’s proposed Greenwich Village Historic District Extension covers 235 buildings and most of the the western 1/3 of GVSHP’s proposed South Village Historic District, and the SoHo Historic District Extension covers several buildings along the southeastern edge of GVSHP’s proposed South Village Historic District (as well as many more further east in SoHo). If enacted, this would be the largest expansion of landmark protections in Greenwich Village since the designation of the Greenwich Village Historic District in 1969.

GVSHP has been leading an effort to landmark ALL of the South Village for several years; the LPC has thus far committed to consider this first section of the South Village, and to look at the remainder after this is completed. Unfortunately, however, in the meantime many buildings in the South Village have been lost or are threatened — in the areas currently being considered for landmark designation, and in those areas which are awaiting consideration.
