South Village Landmark Hearing, Tuesday 11/29 at 10 a.m.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) will hold its public hearing on the third and final phase of GVSHP’s proposed South Village Historic District, called the Sullivan-Thompson Historic District,  on Tuesday, November 29th beginning at 10 a.m. at the LPC Hearing Room in the Municipal Building, One Centre Street (at Chambers Street), 9th floor. Please come!

(l.) St. Anthony of Padua Church and Sullivan Street and (m.) 156 Sullivan Street, both in the new proposed historic district; (r.) image of a 300 ft. tall tower which would be allowable on the south side of Houston and Sullivan Streets without landmark protections.

GVSHP has been working to get the entire South Village landmarked for over ten years. Most of the first phase of GVSHP’s proposed South Village Historic District was landmarked in 2010 and the second phase in 2013.

The South Village contains an incredibly rich record of our city’s 19th and early 20th century development, especially as it relates to immigrants and innovators. Current zoning for the area would allow historic buildings to be knocked down and replaced by 300 ft. tall towers. Developers such as Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner have recently bought properties in the new proposed historic district such as 156 Sullivan Street.

HOW TO HELP:

Thousands of people wrote, rallied, and testified to help get Phase III of the South Village finally considered for landmark designation. Special thanks go to City Councilmember Corey Johnson, whose leadership secured the commitment from the City to move on this, and Preserve New York, a grant program of the Preservation League of NY State and the NY State Council on the Arts, which funded GVSHP’s studies and research which laid the foundation for these designations.
