South Village Landmarking Vote at 9:30 a.m., Celebration at 6 p.m. on 12/13

The Landmarks Preservation Commission has scheduled its vote on Phase III of GVSHP’s proposed South Village Historic District, also known as the Sullivan Thompson Historic District, next Tuesday, December 13th at 9:30 a.m. The vote to landmark approximately one hundred sixty buildings on ten blocks, which GVSHP has been fighting for over ten years to have designated, will take place in the LPC’s hearing room, the Municipal Building, One Centre Street (at Chambers), 9th floor. All are welcome to join GVSHP to witness this historic moment over a decade in the making.  Landmark designation will take immediate effect upon the vote.

If all goes as we hope, there will be a community celebration that night at 6pm – click here for details and to reserve space, which is limited.  Please join us for this joyful event celebrating and remembering a ten-year effort which has resulted in landmarks protections for over six hundred fifty buildings on almost forty blocks in the South Village.  Residents, community leaders, and South Village preservation champions such as City Councilmember Corey Johnson will be in attendance.

Landmark designation of the South Village comes as part of a campaign by GVSHP and our allies to transform a proposal for a rezoning of the St. John’s Terminal site to provide much-needed neighborhood landmark and zoning protections to surrounding areas, and to limit the impact of any development on that site. We scored a huge victory earlier this week when City Councilmember Corey Johnson convinced his colleagues to integrate virtually all of GVSHP’s concerns and demands (and those of many others!) into the final deal – even over the objections of some powerful interest groups.  Landmark designation of this part of the South Village comes just in time, as historic buildings have been lost at an increasing pace, zoning allows new construction of up to 300 ft. in height, and developers such as Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner have been buying properties in the area.
