Hearing on Trump 45-Story "Trojan Horse" Hotel Variance Scheduled
Trump 'Condo-Hotel' hearing on July 13, 2006. Community Board #2’s Zoning Committee will hold a public hearing on Donald Trump’s plan for a 45-story ‘condo-hotel’ at Spring and Varick Streets.
GVSHP has been fighting Trump’s 45-story condo-hotel plan, and requested the Community Board hold this hearing. Lax zoning for the area and the purchase of “air rights” may allow Trump to build as large and tall as he has planned. However, the zoning does NOT allow any kind of residential development in this area, and while Trump is calling the development a “hotel,” in reality it appears it will be largely residential. GVSHP and a coalition of downtown groups have therefore urged the City NOT to issue Trump the permits he needs to build the structure, and we have been joined by City Council Zoning Subcommittee Chair Tony Avella and many others in this request. The City has not yet issued Trump his permits.
If Trump’s current plans are approved by the City, not only will the new development have an enormous impact upon downtown, but it will for the first time EVER give developers a way to get around the law and build residential high-rises without any public approval in manufacturing zones where they are currently prohibited, such as NoHo, SoHo, and much of Hudson Square, the Meatpacking District, and the Far West Village south of Morton Street. It is therefore CRITICAL that we have a big turnout at the CB 2 Zoning Committee to let the City know residents OPPOSE the Trump “condo-hotel” plan.
How To Help:
- COME TO THE COMMUNITY BOARD #2 ZONING COMMITTEE PUBLIC HEARING on the Trump “Hotel” on Thursday, July 13 at 6:30 pm at Housing Works, 320 West 13th Street (enter on Gansevoort Street side of building) to express your opposition Trump’s plan.
