City Council Zoning Subcommittee Chair Tony Avella, Andrew Berman,
Yesterday, scores of protestors joined the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, the SoHo Alliance, Community Board #2, and City Council Zoning Committee Chair Tony Avella outside the launch party for the Trump SoHo 'Condo-Hotel' (see vparchive.gvshp.org/trump.htm#PRPhotos and http://jeffglanczstudio.com/gallery/Trump_Protest_9_07/ for photos and press release). In spite of a massive police presence and threats to arrest any protestor who stayed within view of the entrance to the Trump event, demonstrators got the message out that this development is wrong, it violates the law, and the City is wrong to allow it and to spend taxpayer dollars in court to defend it. At the press conference, the SoHo Alliance (www.sohoalliance.org) announced their intention to bring the City to court to overturn its approval of the Trump project, and GVSHP called upon the City Planning Commission and the City Council to finally move forward with a long-overdue and much needed rezoning of this area to prevent further overdevelopment.
Thank you to all who participated -- the message was heard far and wide, including coverage by :
