Remembering Verna Small

The Villager Obituary

1996 Oral History

Verna Small, who passed away in August of 2008, was one of the founders of GVSHP and a longtime member of the Board of Trustees. Verna was a giant of the preservation movements in Greenwich Village and New York City. She was a major force in the successful fight for the original Greenwich Village Historic District in 1969 and an ardent advocate for extension of historic district protections to the South Village, where she lived for many years. Verna also served for many years as the chair of Community Board #2’s Landmarks Committee.

GVSHP offers an array of historic preservation and research resources.
