Dear Chair Tierney:

I WRITE IN SUPPORT OF THE GREENWICH VILLAGE SOCIETY FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION’S PROPOSAL TO LANDMARK THE NEW YORK BOARD OF FIRE UNDERWRITERS FIRE PATROL #2, AT 84 WEST 3rd STREET, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

This historic building is imminently endangered, and requires immediate attention by the Commission.  It is not only a critical piece of the historic South Village, an area I hope you will consider for historic district designation, but an incredibly important building in its own right.  As one of the last remaining remnants of a 200-year-old institution whose origins go back to Benjamin Franklin, Fire Patrol House #2 is a great piece of New York City history which should not be lost.  The modestly-scaled but monumental building speaks to another era in city life when essential services which we now take for granted as being the responsibility of municipal government were still often provided by private institutions.

While fire patrols may have disappeared from every other city in the United States, this historic building does not have to disappear from Greenwich Village.  Please act as soon as possible to protect fire patrol #2.
