Dear LPC Commissioners:

I urge you to designate the entire Gansevoort Market district, as heard at the March 18 hearing, as soon as possible. Several major changes are being proposed to buildings in the district, and these must not be allowed without full LPC and public review. The tremendous turnout of support in favor of designation at the hearing before the LPC in March shows there is an overwhelming desire to see this area preserved, and I hope the LPC will act before it is too late.

Gansevoort Market is a unique area of New York City. As Manhattan’s last remaining market neighborhood, it is an area of enormous historic and architectural importance. Gansevoort Market contains a sense of place that is unlike any other in New York City, the loss of which would be tragic. Buildings range from mid-19th century residences and market buildings to later lofts, manufacturing, storage, and converted market buildings, which tell a compelling story of New York’s development as a maritime, transit and manufacturing center. These distinctive structures, their unique overhanging metal sheds, and the cobblestoned streets all come together to create an area which stands out from any other in the City.

Right now Gansevoort Market faces an immediate threat to its preservation from several proposed new developments in the area and alterations to its historic buildings. Historic district designation would ensure that future development of this unique area would be compatible with the existing historic fabric of this vital mixed-use neighborhood.

Again, I strongly urge you to designate the Gansevoort Market historic district as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
