Progress at 43 MacDougal Street
 GVSHP has been working for years to get this landmarked but dilapidated and neglected 1846 house at King Street restored. A prior owner refused for more than two decades to make necessary repairs, and GVSHP pushed the Landmarks Preservation Commission and other city agencies to pursue legal action against them. Following this the owner sold the house, and the new owner has shown a much greater interest in restoring the property (more background here).
The new owner has put forward a plan for renovation and restoration, which included an application for a very small, barely visible increase in the height of the top floor of the house (formerly the maid’s quarters, this attic space had five foot high ceilings). GVSHP supported the application, and we are pleased to report that at Tuesday’s Landmarks Preservation Commission hearing the plan was approved. View the full application here.
Construction on the rooftop is expected to begin this summer and last approximately twelve months. We hope the work will be carried out in a timely fashion and that this building will once again become a vibrant part of the Charlton-King-Vandam Historic District. GVSHP will continue to closely monitor this site, as we have worked for years to see 43 MacDougal fully restored.
