EMAIL + CALL BOROUGH PRESIDENT GALE BREWER TO URGE HER TO INCLUDE PROTECTIONS FOR GREENWICH VILLAGE & THE EAST VILLAGE AS PART OF APPROVALS FOR 14TH STREET ‘TECH HUB’
Call Borough President Brewer at 212-669-8300and say: “I urge Borough President Brewer to include the proposed protections for Greenwich Village and the East Village AS A CONDITION OF ANY APPROVALS FOR THE 14th STREET TECH HUB.” Please be polite and concise.
The Mayor wants to use city-owned land on E. 14th Street near 4th Avenue, where a PC Richards store now stands, to develop a 21-story “Tech Hub” which he says will be a “front door” to the tech industry in New York. While the development may provide some worthwhile services and training to underserved New Yorkers, it will also accelerate the rapid transformation of the blocks of Greenwich Village and the East Village to the south, between Union Square and Astor Place, into an extension of ‘Silicon Alley’ and ‘Midtown South,’ as the tech industry and other development pressure leads to a growing flood of large hotels, office buildings, and high-rise condos in the area. Only if the zoning protections we have been demanding for this area are included as part of the deal will Greenwich Village and the East Village be safe; otherwise, the Tech Hub will accelerate this growing wave of overdevelopment sweeping over this area.
