Fight for Landmark Protections
in the Endangered Neighborhood
South of Union Square –
Hearing Tuesday at 9:30am

The seven buildings being considered for landmark designation (top l.) 841 Broadway; (top r.) 840, 836, 832 Broadway; (bottom l.) 832, 830, and 826 Broadway; (bottom r.) 817 Broadway.  None are endangered, and are just the tip of the iceberg of historic buildings in this area that warrant landmark designation.

This coming Tuesday, December 4th, starting at 9:30am, the Landmarks Preservation Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed landmarking of seven buildings on Broadway between 12th and 13th Streets. This stems from GVSHP’s demand for comprehensive landmark and/or zoning protections for the area south of Union Square, from the University Place to the 3rd Avenue corridors, as part of any approvals for the Mayor’s planned ‘Tech Hub’ on 14th Street. Instead of providing such protections, Councilmember Carlina Rivera agreed to a deal in which the City agreed to consider seven buildings for landmark designation – 3.5% of the approximately two hundred GVSHP had identified in the area as worthy of consideration. Such a deal neither protects this area from the increased development pressure from the planned Tech Hub, nor protects its history or character.

Historic buildings like the former St. Denis Hotel at Broadway and 11th Street are being demolished to make way for glass office towers due to a lack of landmark protections for this area.

GVSHP will be using the opportunity of the city’s hearing on landmarking these seven buildings to urge that more comprehensive landmark protections be considered for this area, and we ask you to do the same:

Come to the hearing on Tuesday, December 4 starting at 9:30am at the Landmarks Preservation Commission hearing room, the Municipal Building, One Centre Street, 9th floor. Sign up to speak on any of the seven buildings or all seven; use the letter here as sample testimony.

GVSHP is calling for landmark protections for much of this area, not just the seven buildings currently being considered.
