CRITICAL GANSEVOORT HEARING SET FOR 3:30PM TUESDAY, NOV. 10

The hearing by the Landmarks Preservation Commission on the proposed massive redevelopment of the south side of Gansevoort Street in the heart of the Meatpacking District has been set for 3:30pm next Tuesday, Nov. 10th.  GVSHP strongly urges you to attend this hearing, and to testify in opposition to this totally inappropriate, out-of-scale, precedent-setting proposal.

The south side of Gansevoort Street is the only intact ensemble of 1- and 2-story meatmarket buildings remaining in the Gansevoort Market Historic District.  The low-rise, cobblestoned street serves as a gateway not only to the Meatpacking District, but to the Whitney, the Hudson River Park, the High Line, and the West Village.  It embodies the character and sense of place which GVSHP fought to protect by proposing and securing landmark designation for much of the Meatpacking District in 2003.  The proposal would demolish two of the buildings, with one replacement reaching 122 feet in height, and adding enormous additions to other buildings.

If approved, the development would not only destroy Gansevoort street and the surrounding historic district’s unique sense of place, but set a terrible precedent regarding the type of construction allowed in landmarked districts.  See the letter from local elected officials to the Landmarks Preservation Commission unanimously opposing the plan.

The developer has hired petitioners, asking people on the street in the  Meatpacking District to support their plan to “Revitalize Gansevoort Street” with their oversized development.  DON’T SIGN THE PETITION – send letters and come to the hearing to show your opposition!
