Opposition Grows to Oversized Gansevoort Plan;
Hearing Nov. 10
Opposition to the proposal for demolition and massive new construction on Gansevoort Street in the Gansevoort Market Historic District continues to grow. Following the packed Community Board #2 public hearing where not a single member of the public expressed support for the plan, Community Board #2 came out unanimously against the proposal. Now The Villager newspaper has also editorialized strongly against the plan; you can also read their coverage of the public hearing here.
This proposal runs counter to the entire reason why GVSHP first proposed and fought for landmark designation for the Gansevoort Market district. We are working closely with local groups such as SaveGansevoort.org to ensure this plan is defeated, especially as we approach the hearing on the proposal by Landmarks Preservation Commission, which will determine whether or not it is approved.
