GVSHP and Allies File Suit to Overturn NYU Approvals
 As promised, GVSHP, NYU Faculty Against the Sexton Plan, the citywide Historic Districts Council, and tenant, neighborhood, and parks groups from the Village, East Village, NoHo, and SoHo have joined in filing a suit to overturn the approvals granted for NYU’s massive Village expansion plan. The suit challenges the approvals made by the City and the State which would allow NYU to take public land, eliminate park space, violate the terms of the agreements under which NYU was given public land in the 1960’s, and shoehorn 2 million square feet of space into an area already oversaturated with NYU facilities, transforming a residential neighborhood into a twenty-year construction zone.
In its thirty-two year existence, GVSHP has never before turned to the courts. However, in this case we felt the magnitude of the impact of the NYU plan was too great, the consequence of the approvals too far-reaching, the breaking of prior agreements too indefensible, the refusal to meaningfully consider public input or reasonable alternatives too cavalier, the failure to adhere to the appropriate process too glaring, and the bases for these decisions too problematic to leave the results unchallenged.
 We are grateful to be joined in this suit by such a broad and expansive array of groups and individuals, and to be ably represented by the international law firm of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher.
