Small Business Jobs Survival Act Reintroduced, Push Continues

We are pleased to report that the Small Business Jobs Survival Act (SBJSA) has been reintroduced in the City Council, and Speaker Corey Johnson, who has in the past supported the measure, has publicly committed to holding a hearing on it. In spite of having the support of a majority of members in the City Council, the SBJSA has never received a vote in the City Council, or even a hearing in many years.

Throughout our city and neighborhoods, we are seeing an increasing wave of small businesses forced out of their longstanding homes, and empty storefronts replacing vibrant streetscapes. The SBJSA would give small business owners a firmer footing to be able to negotiate reasonable lease renewals, rather than simply being kicked out on the street. Too often small businesses are not even given the opportunity to negotiate a new lease, just on the hope of the landlord finding a new tenant willing to pay an astronomically increased rent.
