St. Vincent’s/Rudin Rezoning Hearing September 15th

Tomorrow night, Thursday September 15, Community Board #2 will hold an important public hearing and vote on the proposed rezoning of the former St. Vincent’s Hospital site (read the full proposal HERE).  All those interested in this important issue are urged to attend.

Rudin Management is seeking a rezoning of the former St. Vincent’s campus east of 7th Avenue in order to facilitate residential development there.  Under their plan, they would alter and convert four existing hospital buildings for residential use, and demolish four others for new residential development.  While this development has been approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission, it still requires a substantial rezoning, which must be approved by the City Planning Commission and the City Council.  The Community Board vote is the first advisory step in that process.

The site in question was rezoned in 1979 to allow the construction of two large new hospital buildings.  The additional bulk allowed by the rezoning in 1979 was granted specifically for a public purpose.  With the proposed project, Rudin is seeking to keep almost all of that additional bulk and use it for a private, for-profit, condo development.

GVSHP does not believe that special considerations granted for a development with a very important public purpose, such as the former St. Vincent’s Hospital, should be accessed for a private development as proposed here.

HOW TO HELP:

  • Attend the Community Board #2 public hearing on the St. Vincent’s/Rudin Rezoning Plan tomorrow, Thursday, September 15th at 6:30 pm at the LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th Street, 3rd fl., rm. 301.  Tell Community Board #2 that special zoning considerations granted to St. Vincent’s Hospital like additional bulk should NOT be granted to a private developer – see sample testimony HERE.
