Arturo's on Houston and Thompson Streets

Arturo’s, best known for its delicious coal-oven pizza, first opened on MacDougal Street in 1957 before moving to its current location on Houston and Thompson Streets in the early sixties. Their delicious food and family atmosphere have made it a popular destination in the Italian South Village for many years. Please join us as we recognize Arturo’s with a 2012 Village Award at GVSHP’s Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 7th.

Currently owned by sister and brother team Lisa and Scott Giunta, you’ll still find the same food and décor as when their parents Arthur and Betty opened it fifty-five years ago. The family has lived in the neighborhood for the better part of a century. Arthur and Betty grew on MacDougal Street, and Lisa and Scott both attended local Village Catholic schools.

Regulars just might be greeted by name by the staff—many have worked at the restaurant for decades. Favorite dishes, besides the pizza, include an arugula salad, penne with vodka sauce, and the most popular appetizer: Clams Arturo. Nightly jazz, instituted by Arthur in the 1970s, also brings in a crowd. Diners might find singer Tony Bennett sitting in with the house band, or a famous celebrity enjoying their dinner.

Arturo’s will be presented with a Village Award for serving delicious coal‐fired pizza and Italian food and providing warm hospitality to the community in their family‐owned South Village restaurant. We hope to see you at GVSHP’s 2012 Annual Meeting as we honor Arturo’s and seven other awardees who are being honored for their contributions to the Village. Stay-tuned to Off the Grid for upcoming posts on our other 2012 Village awardees.

How many times did I cop a feel on that really hot Bartender/Manager. He had such pretty eyes and he worked out. It definitely was not his shirt. He’s my big Ragu, my Pasta Rigatzu!
