We’re Facing A LOT in 2020 –
Help Ensure We Can Meet Those Challenges and WIN!

The coming year promises to be a challenging one for Village Preservation.

A developer is seeking to demolish 14-16 Fifth Avenue (5-story building in the center of the block) and replace it with a 244 ft. tall tower.

A precedent-setting application to demolish a pair of 170-year old houses in the Greenwich Village Historic District and replace it with a tower FOUR TIMES its size and four times the average height of buildings on that block will be coming under public review. Help ensure we can win this fight!

Increasing pressure is bearing down on Greenwich Village and the East Village below Union Square to become an extension of “Silicon Alley” and “Midtown South” in the wake of the recent Tech Hub approval, with low-rise, residential, and historic structures being demolished to make way for office buildings and other high-rises, while the City continues to resist our call for landmark protections. Help us increase pressure on city officials to act!

We’re undertaking a major push to expand landmark protections in the East Village to preserve that neighborhood’s great history and architecture. Help us make that effort a success!

City officials are hinting at a potential “upzoning” in SoHo and NoHo following their yearlong ‘study’ of the area, increasing the allowable size of new development there well over the roughly 10-12 story structures currently allowed. Help ensure we protect these neighborhoods!

Images of new development in SoHo (l.) and NoHo, showing the scale allowed under current rules.  An upzoning could dramatically increase the allowable size of new development.

Real estate interests, government officials, and some advocates are pushing for relaxing or even removing zoning and landmark restrictions we have fought for and secured throughout Greenwich Village, the East Village, and NoHo to spur more demolitions and larger, more out-of-scale new construction. Help ensure this doesn't happen!

We’ve got to take on these fights and win, as we have so many others over the years, including securing landmark designation of over 1,250 buildings in our neighborhoods, often over the opposition of the real estate lobby and even City Hall. We’ve got to take our victories over the years — blocking hugely out-of-scale towers in the Meatpacking District, on Bleecker Street, and in the East Village — and build upon them to face this next generation of threats.

Some of the many out-of-context and out-of-scale buildings Village Preservation has helped stop or modify over the years (l. to r.) in the Meatpacking District, on Bleecker Street, on East 14th and West 14th Streets.

But we can only do that with your help. Please donate to Village Preservation today, and help us ensure that the future of our neighborhoods includes its past.
