Elected Officials Join Scores of
Neighbors and Tenant Activists To
Oppose 14-16 Fifth Avenue Plan

Village Preservation was joined by Borough President Gale Brewer, State Senator Brad Hoylman, State Assemblymembers Deborah Glick and Harvey Epstein, a rep of City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, tenant advocates, and over one hundred residents in the freezing cold last Friday to condemn the application by Madison Realty Capital for permission to tear down 20 units of housing (much of it affordable) in a landmarked 1848 building and replace it with a 244 ft. tall tower with just 18 units of housing for the super-rich.  Watch the video, see pictures, read the press release, and check out coverage from NY1, WCBS Radio, The Village Sun, Patch, and 6sqft.

We are grateful for the strong support from our elected officials, the scores of residents who braved the sub-freezing temperatures, and the representatives of various tenant groups, including those who have been fighting Madison Realty Capital in their East Village properties.  Madison had originally indicated that they planned to officially file their application in January, but seem to have slowed down in the face of fervent opposition. 

Village Preservation has compiled considerable research about the historic significance of these buildings and the important figures connected to them buttressing our argument that the Landmarks Preservation Commission should not approve the demolition of 14-16 Fifth Avenue (read here and here).  We have also compiled considerable data to show that the proposed new building would be woefully out of scale for its landmarked surroundings, including that it would be 75% taller than the average height of buildings on Fifth Avenue in the Greenwich Village Historic District, and four times the height of the average building on its block.
