"One if by Land" Defaced

Last week, the owners of noted West Village eatery "One If By Land, Two If By Sea" at 17 Barrow Street apparently brazenly removed the distinctive archway surrounding the entryway to the restaurant on the 1834 building (the archway, which was in place when the building was landmarked as part of the Greenwich Village Historic District in 1969, was a later addition to the building).  GVSHP received many distressed calls about the removal, and immediately reached out to the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) to report the unpermitted work, ask for inspections, and seek immediate enforcement action by the city agency.

Thus far the LPC has issued a stop-work order and violations for the illegal work.  GVSHP will continue to pursue this case to seek full enforcement of the law and restoration of the historic architectural details to the building, which the LPC can require.

GVSHP regularly monitors for landmarks and zoning violations in our neighborhood, and pursues inspections, service of violations, and correction of illegal work.  We encourage the public to report violations to the City and to GVSHP to assist with seeking the swiftest and most appropriate response from the city agencies.
