No Decision Yet on "One if By Land"
Today the Landmarks Preservation Commission heard a proposal by the new owners of venerable Village restaurant/institution ‘One If By land, Two if By Sea’ at 17 Barrow Street to legalize their unpermitted removal of a decorative arch from the façade which dated from the early 20th or late 19th century. GVSHP reported the illegal removal from the nearly two hundred year old building to the Commission this summer and urged that violations be issued. We opposed today’s application for legalization, and urged the Commission to instead require that the destroyed arch be restored to the façade.
The Commission made no decision, asking the applicant to explore the feasibility of restoring the arch. The application will come back to the Commission at a later date for further review.
Find out more about the application and how you can urge the Commission to call for full restoration of the destroyed arch here, or just email comments@lpc.nyc.gov.
