43 MacDougal Street Progress, At Last
 After years of effort by GVSHP and neighbors, pressure upon the owners of the landmarked derelict 1846 house at 43 MacDougal Street has finally resulted in some tangible progress.
After several weeks of removing years worth of accumulated garbage and refuse from inside the building, earlier this month the roof of the landmarked structure was finally sealed and repaired. The roof repair should help end the continued deterioration of the building resulting from years of leaks and dripping water running through the rotting building every time it rains or snows. And the removal of the accumulated garbage should help alleviate problems with vermin emanating from the building, reduce the risk of fire, and finally allow city inspectors to make a complete inspection of the property as we have been urging them to do for many months. Following years of neglect by the owner and lack of action by the city, in 2009 GVSHP was able to get the Landmarks Preservation to commit to pursue a “demolition by neglect” case against the owner, which is the strongest legal action the city can take to force the restoration of a landmarked property. We will continue to closely monitor the conditions on this site, and push for a full restoration of this long-neglected, historic property.
