Pushing for action on landmarked but derelict house at 43 MacDougal Street
 For several years, GVSHP and neighbors have been pushing to have the derelict landmarked 1846 house at 43 MacDougal Street (at King Street) restored. The house’s sadly deteriorating condition has been a health and safety hazard for neighbors, as well as a violation of landmark laws which require basic maintenance of designated properties.
After many months of effort, in May 2009 GVSHP was finally able to get the Landmarks Preservation Commission to begin to initiate a “Demolition By Neglect” case against the owner, the strongest legal tool for forcing a negligent owner to make repairs. In response, the owner finally began basic stabilization work, and promised to finally begin repair work once that was complete. Though minor stabilization work took place this Spring, all work on the property has since halted, with no progress on repairs, and no further action by the Landmarks Preservation Commission to enforce the law.
GVSHP has written to the Chair of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, calling upon the agency to resume efforts to force the owner to make legally-required repairs, as they promised to in 2009. Only through these means will the health and safety hazards which the building has posed for years be finally cured; GVSHP will continue to push until this happens.
