43 MacDougal Nightmare to End?

43 MacDougal StreetGVSHP and neighbors have been fighting for years to see the empty and deteriorating landmarked 1846 rowhouse at 43 MacDougal Street (at King Street) restored.  We have regularly pushed city agencies to take enforcement action against the intransigent owners, and have endeavored to highlight the dangerous and unsanitary conditions at the house.  Though penalties were levied, the owner did little to restore the house.

Now, however, there may be a glimmer of hope.  43 MacDougal Street has been sold to new owners, and GVSHP has reached out to the new owners to encourage them to restore the house and to offer them assistance.  GVSHP has also reached out to the Landmarks Preservation Commission to urge them to vigorously pursue a restoration plan with the new owners.  The new owners have publicly stated their intention to bring the building “up to code.”  Read recent coverage from DNAinfo

We have a long way to go before the house is in appropriate condition and the requirements of the landmarks law are actually being followed here.  However, with this change in ownership, there is a new reason for optimism.  GVSHP will continue to closely monitor the situation and continue to work to ensure that conditions improve at 43 MacDougal Street.
