Don’t Turn Greenwich Village and the East Village Into Midtown South: Op-Ed
GVSHP recently penned an op-ed in GlobeSt.com arguing against the transformation of Greenwich Village and the East Village into Midtown South or an extension of Silicon Alley – a disturbing trend underway now which will be accelerated if the Mayor’s 14th Street “Tech Hub” is approved without the neighborhood protections we have been calling for – read it here.
As the op-ed argues, the only way we will prevent this from happening is if Councilmember Carlina Rivera, who represents the area, stands firm on her campaign promise that in order for the Mayor to get her vote on the Tech Hub, he must also approve the neighborhood protections we and she have been fighting for. The Tech Hub is now halfway through the public approval process, with the final stop at the City Council this summer. This is the critical time for us to let City officials know that residents of Greenwich Village and the East Village will not sit by idly and watch their neighborhoods transformed into high-rise office and hotel districts, as current zoning and the pending Tech Hub encourages.
