Save University Place/Broadway Press Conference Tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 14, 12:30pm

Please join GVSHP, City Councilmember Rosie Mendez, State Senator Brad Hoylman, Community Board #2, and local leaders for a press conference tomorrow, Saturday, November 14th at 12:30 pm to call upon the City to finally move ahead on GVSHP’s proposed rezoning plan for the University Place/Broadway corridors.  Current zoning for the area allows 300+ ft. tall towers, such as the one being planned for the Bowlmor site at University Place and 12th Street. More such out-of-scale development could follow in the area if the City does not enact GVSHP’s rezoning plan, which would put in place reasonable height limits for new construction, eliminate current incentives for dorm and other university construction in the area, and incentivize the creation or preservation of affordable housing.

Thus far the City has stubbornly refused to consider GVSHP’s
rezoning plan, in spite of strong support from local residents, area elected officials, and the Community BoardCurrently the City is proposing massive upzonings and weakening of height limits on new development in our neighborhood (see below) claiming it is necessary to create affordable housing (a claim GVSHP and many others strongly refute).  But confoundingly they are refusing to consider our rezoning plan for the University Place/Broadway corridors which would not only protect the scale and character of the area, but for the first time introduce measures which could result in the creation and preservation of affordable housing.
