Double Rejection: Community Boards 2 and 3 Both Say A Resounding "No" To Hotel; Special Permit Plan

Last night Community Board #3 (East Village, Lower East Side) joined Community Board #2 (Greenwich Village/SoHo/NoHo) in overwhelmingly and resoundingly rejecting the “Hotel Special Permit” plan put forth by Mayor de Blasio as part of his Tech Hub deal with Councilmember Carlina Rivera. Both boards cited its total lack of efficacy in dealing with the overdevelopment issues that the affected areas of Greenwich Village and the East Village south of Union Square face. Both also cited the multiple mistakes, oversights, and inaccuracies in the city’s Environmental Assessment for the proposal and the lack of recognition of nearly two hundred historically significant buildings in the area as exposed by Village Preservation. The boards also called for the real landmark and zoning protections for the area that Village Preservation has proposed and been fighting for, and that Councilmember Carlina Rivera promised to condition her support for the Tech Hub upon – a promise she failed to keep.
