Opposing Plans for Massive Additions to Chelsea Market
 In 2001, GVSHP proposed the Gansevoort Market Historic District, which included what is now known as Chelsea Market, the former Nabisco factories between 15th and 16th Streets, 9th and 10th Avenues. While New York City ultimately excluded the Chelsea Market complex from the Gansevoort Market Historic District they designated, in 2007 GVSHP was able to get the complex included in the Gansevoort Market State and National Register Historic District. Thus while north of 14th Street, GVSHP has a strong interest in preserving the history and character of this singularly important complex, which is integral to the history of the Meatpacking District.
That is why we were so disturbed when the new owners of the complex, Jamestown Properties, announced they were seeking a zoning change to allow massive additions to the complex, including a commercial tower on 10th Avenue and a hotel on 9th Avenue (see images HERE). GVSHP is opposed to such a rezoning, and recently joined with several local community groups to meet with the office of Council Speaker Quinn, who represents the area, to urge that the proposed rezoning be rejected. Any such change must get the approval of both the City Council and the City Planning Commission.
