Fighting to Save Chelsea Market
 GVSHP and a coalition of local groups continue to fight a plan to allow a significant upzoning of the Chelsea Market complex to facilitate large additions at the 9th and 10th Avenue ends, including a hotel. Chelsea Market is composed of the former Nabisco factories built in stages over the late 19th and early 20th centuries (read more history HERE and HERE). In 2007, GVSHP got the complex listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places as part of the Gansevoort Market Historic District; the complex was in the district which GVSHP proposed for New York City landmark designation, but was cut out of the district which the city ultimately designated in 2003.
As part of the ongoing effort to preserve this singular iconic complex and unique example of adaptive re-use (see images HERE), GVSHP and the coalition recently met with State Senator Tom Duane, and we have produced a poster about the preservation effort you can print out and use HERE. The rezoning required for the enormous planned additions to Chelsea Market can only be enacted following a recommendation by the Borough President and if approved by the City Council and the City Planning Commission.
