Chelsea Market Upzoning Approved By City Planning; City Council Next

FooterToday the City Planning Commission voted to upzone Chelsea Market in order to allow two large towers to be added to the 9th and 10th Avenue ends of the complex, which is forbidden by the current zoning.  All 13 of the Commission’s members, including those appointed by the Mayor, Public Advocate, and Borough Presidents, voted in favor.  With this vote, the plan goes to the City Council, which has fifty days to hold a public hearing and vote upon the plan, which they can approve, disapprove, or modify.  The Council’s approval is needed for the plan to go through.

GVSHP and Save Chelsea have written to Council Speaker Quinn, who represents the area, urging her to disapprove the plan (read HERE).  GVSHP will also shortly be delivering to Speaker Quinn an on-line petition with nearly 1,500 signatures urging her to reject the plan (see and sign HERE).

We feel strongly that upzoning Chelsea Market to allow huge new additions on top of the historic complex is unnecessary and wrong.  We will let you know as soon as the City Council hearings have been scheduled and how you can participate.
