Chelsea Market Upzoning Plan Heard By City Planning Commission; Vote To Follow
 Last week the City Planning Commission held its sole public hearing on the application to upzone Chelsea Market to allow large new hotel and office additions above the historic complex (images HERE). GVSHP strongly urged the urged the City Planning Commission to reject the application and to preserve Chelsea Market (read our testimony HERE), as did by far the majority of those who testified.
Both Borough President Stringer’s recent recommendation regarding the proposed development and the comments at the hearing by City Planning Commission Chair Amanda Burden indicate an uncomfortability with the current proposed 10th Avenue tower, which we agree with. But they also both suggested as a solution simply moving the proposed addition to the middle of the block or to 9th Avenue, which we strongly disagree with.
The public can still submit testimony to the City Planning Commission regarding the Chelsea Market proposal before they vote upon the application later this summer. If the Commission approves the plan, it must then go to the City Council for public hearings, and can only proceed if the Council approves it as well. As the representative for the district which includes Chelsea Market, Speaker Quinn will largely determine what the Council will do.
