The corner of 2nd Avenue and 7th Street (left) before the gas explosion (with 119 2nd Avenue/45 E. 7th Street in foreground), and (right) after.
Applications have been filed for a 7-story, 21-unit apartment building at the northwest corner of 2nd Avenue and 7th Street, where several buildings were destroyed in a fatal gas explosion in 2015. Because GVSHP and our allies were able to get this area rezoned in 2008, there are now contextual height limits for any new development on this site. And because GVSHP and our allies were able to get this area landmarked in 2012, any proposed new construction here must go through a public review and approval process to ensure that the design is appropriate for the site and its surroundings.
Once the landmarks applications for the proposed new building have been filed, GVSHP will notify the public and post details on our website about the hearings and the details of the proposed design so you can weigh in on the decision-making process. This is a particularly sensitive site with a troubled history which must be carefully considered in reviewing any proposal for new construction here. |
