Facing Opposition, East 14th St. Developer Slashes Zoning Request

Revised planned development for 432 East 14th Street/435 East 13th Street

We’re pleased to report the zoning variance request which GVSHP has opposed for an oversized new building at 432 East 14th Street/435 East 13th Street has been slashed by two-thirds.  GVSHP has been leading opposition to a request by a developer for a variance or exemption from local zoning restrictions in order to build a larger than normally allowable building on the block bounded by East 13th and 14th Streets and the west side of Avenue A, on the site of a former post office.

In January, GVSHP and our allies pushed back strongly against the developer’s claim at the Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA) hearing that the larger development would not negatively impact community character, and that the zoning variance was warranted because of the “hardship” faced by the developer. The developer will be returning to the Board and Standards and Appeals to continue to make their case on Tuesday, March 28th, but for a greatly reduced zoning variance owing to the pushback they received in January. While significantly reduced, the developer is still asking to build larger than normally allowable, based upon what we believe are false and inaccurate claims about the project.

GVSHP will be testifying against the variance at the hearing on Tuesday, and holding a rally in opposition with our allies just before.
