Critical East Village Landmarking Hearing Tuesday, June 26th at 3:30 P.M.

East Village MapAn important reminder: This coming Tuesday, June 26th the Landmarks Preservation Commission will hold a long-awaited public hearing on the proposed East Village/Lower East Side Historic District starting at 3:30 pm.  (see map HERE).  The proposed district is far and away the largest expansion of landmark protections ever considered in the East Village.  As there has been vocal opposition from a small number of institutions in the proposed district, IT IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE HAVE A STRONG SHOWING IN SUPPORT OF EXTENDING LANDMARKS PROTECTIONS IN THE EAST VILLAGE.

The East Village is one of the most historically rich neighborhoods in New York City, with extant structures dating from the late 1700’s and reflecting its incredible mercantile, immigrant, and artistic history.  And yet only a tiny percentage of the East Village is recognized or protected by landmark designation.

East VillageGVSHP and allied groups have worked hard to document the East Village’s historic significance and protect it.  With Councilmember Rosie Mendez’s help, we were able to get the proposed historic district expanded to include critically important sites we have struggled to protect.  The proposed historic district now includes Congregation Mezritch Synagogue, the last operating tenement synagogue in the East Village; 101 Avenue A, a beautifully ornate 1876 tenement which has housed the groundbreaking Pyramid Club since 1979; and the stunningly beautiful Russian Orthodox Cathedral at 59 East 2nd Street.  Click HERE for images of more buildings in the proposed historic district.

As historic buildings continue to be lost throughout the East Village, including in the proposed historic district, it’s critical that we get the Commission to approve the landmark designation as soon as possible.
