Community Board #3 Votes Overwhelmingly in Favor of Proposed Historic Districts in East Village
 Tuesday night, Community Board #3 voted overwhelmingly to support designation of the proposed East Village/Lower East Side and East 10th Street Historic Districts. This is a major step towards preservation of the irreplaceable and increasingly threatened historic resources and character of the East Village.
We want to thank everyone who attended this and prior Community Board hearings for showing their support. We would also like to thank the East Village Community Coalition, the Lower East Side Preservation Initiative, the Bowery Alliance of Neighbors, the 10th and Stuyvesant Block Association, the Historic Districts Council, and the NY Landmarks Conservancy for their invaluable contributions. And we would especially like to thank City Councilmember Rosie Mendez for her advocacy and leadership which helped make this possible, as well as State Senator Tom Duane for his show of support for the proposal.
 Because the proposed historic districts have been “calendared” by the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC), they enjoy a modicum of protection. However, true protection for these areas will not come until they have been approved as historic districts by the LPC. The next step in that process is for the LPC to hold a public hearing on the proposals; we expect such a hearing to be scheduled in the coming weeks. Opponents of the landmark designation continue to argue strongly against designation, so we will continue to need your help to ensure that these areas of the East Village are protected.
